Textiles – Investigation of biodegradability and ecotoxicity in soil under realistic conditions – Test method

Abstract

This document specifies a standardized test method for determining the biodegradability of textiles under realistic conditions in the soil medium and for investigating the ecotoxic potential of degradation products. The determination of biodegradability is based on the analysis of the oxygen demand in a respirometer system or the amount of carbon dioxide produced during degradation. The aim is to generate comparable results for a systematic evaluation. This method can be used for the following materials - Textiles that consist partially or completely of synthetic polymers and/or copolymers, - Textiles that contain additives such as softeners, colorants or finishes (e.g. flame retardants), - Various textile constructions such as woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, non-woven fabrics, etc. This document is not applicable to building materialsand geotextiles. This DIN SPEC has been developed according to the PAS procedure. The development of a DIN SPEC according to the PAS procedure is carried out in DIN-SPEC-consortiums and does not require the participation of all stakeholders.
