Project

Tool for determining the required window sizes for sufficient brightness and a desired level of daylight supply in living spaces

Abstract

This document provides a table procedure that can be used to determine minimum window sizes for living spaces. The window size required to achieve the "Low" recommendation level for the supply of daylight in accordance with DIN EN 17037 is shown for various boundary conditions. As a larger daylight quotient is required to create the same impression of brightness in interiors with skylights compared to lighting with sidelights, the skylight area required to achieve the "Medium" recommendation level is also specified for skylights. For windows in vertical façades, it is possible to check which window size is required to achieve the minimum brightness defined in DIN 5034-1.
