DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE

Overview

This part of IEC 60794-1 applies to optical fiber cables for use in telecommunications equipment and in equipment using similar techniques, and to cables containing a combination of optical fibers and electrical conductors. The primary aim of this standard is to provide the end user with an overview of the contents of the various parts of the IEC 60794-1-2X series of standards. The following relationships apply to the test methods with regard to the IEC references: - General guidance IEC 60794-1-2, - Procedure E - Mechanical test methods IEC 60794-1-21, - Procedure F - Environmental test methods IEC 60794-1-22, - Procedure G - Cable elements test methods IEC 607 94-1-23, - Procedure H - Electrical test methods IEC 60794-1-24. These documents define test methods to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the geometrical, transmission, material, mechanical, ageing (environmental stress) and climatic properties of optical fibre cables and, where applicable, for electrical requirements. The wording "optical cables" contained in the documents may also include optical fiber units, fiber units for microtubes, and so on. The secondary objective of this standard is to support the user with useful instructions for testing optical fiber cables. The standard differs from DIN EN 60794-1-2 (VDE 0888-100-2)-2014-07 and DIN EN 60794-1-20 (VDE 0888-100-20):2014-10 as follows: a) the detailed cross-reference tables have been deleted and replaced by higher-level ones that refer to generic specification standards; b) the content of DIN EN 60794-1-20 (VDE 0888-100-20):2014-10 has been incorporated; c) the standard values of the optical test wavelengths have been included; d ) the present document has been streamlined by cross-references to IEC 60794-1-1; e) the definitions for "no change of attenuation" contained in IEC 60794-1-20 have been transferred to IEC 60794-1-1; f) the title has been adapted to reflect the content of this new edition. This standard is intended for use in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1:2015. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenkabel" ("Optical fibres and fibre cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
