Project

Primary batteries - Part 1: General

Abstract

The purpose of this part of IEC 60086 is to standardize primary batteries in terms of their dimensions, designation system, arrangement of poles, markings, test methods, typical performance, safety and environmental aspects . On the one hand, this document specifies requirements for primary cells and batteries. On the other hand, this document also defines procedures for standardizing the requirements for these batteries. This document defines code letters, electrodes, electrolytes and both nominal and maximum open-circuit voltages of electrochemical systems as a means of classifying primary batteries. The purpose of this part of IEC 60086 is to assist users of primary batteries, equipment designers and primary battery manufacturers by ensuring that batteries from different manufacturers are interchangeable based on standardized form, fit and function. Furthermore, standardized test procedures for primary cells and batteries are also specified for this purpose. This document also contains requirements in Annex A that justify inclusion in or continued maintenance of batteries in the IEC 60086 series of standards.
