Project

Electrical insulating materials - Determination of the effects of ionizing radiation - Part 4: Classification system for service in radiation environments

Abstract

The purpose of this classification system is to provide a guideline for the selection and labeling of insulating materials for use in the radiation fields of nuclear reactor plants, nuclear fuel manufacturing and reprocessing plants, irradiation facilities, particle accelerators and X-ray equipment. The classification system provides a range of parameters for characterizing the usability of the three groups of polymer materials (brittle-hard plastics, tough-elastic plastics, elastomers) for use in facilities that are exposed to ionizing radiation. It forms the basis for the quantitative determination of the suitability of such materials for this area of application and thus provides a guideline for the material specification and for the agreement of delivery conditions between manufacturer and user.
